IMO Compliance Solutions

Ballast Water Treatment System Retrofitting

The International Maritime Organization's Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention requires all vessels to install an approved Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS). Inter Ocean Group provides end-to-end BWTS retrofitting services — from system selection and engineering design to physical installation, commissioning, and post-installation support.

Our team of marine engineers and electricians has extensive experience installing BWTS across a wide range of vessel types and sizes. We work with all leading BWTS manufacturers and manage the entire project to ensure minimum time in drydock.

All BWTS retrofitting work is carried out at our Dubai Maritime City and Al Jadaf facilities, with class surveyors attending as required for certification.

IMO BWM Compliance Deadline

All vessels must comply with the BWM Convention at their next IOPP renewal survey. Don't leave it too late.

Our BWTS Retrofitting Process

01

Vessel Survey & System Selection

We survey the vessel's ballast system, tank arrangement, and space availability to recommend the most suitable BWTS from the IMO-approved list, considering flow rates, pipe routing, and installation constraints.

02

Engineering Design Package

Our engineers prepare a full installation drawing package including piping modifications, electrical cable routing, control panel layout, and class approval drawings submitted to the relevant classification society.

03

Class Approval

We manage the class approval process, liaising with surveyors from DNV, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, ABS, or other relevant bodies to obtain approval prior to installation.

04

Physical Installation

Piping modifications, system mounting, electrical cabling, and integration with existing ballast pumps and controls carried out efficiently during drydock to minimise vessel downtime.

05

Commissioning & Sea Trials

Full functional testing, commissioning in the presence of the class surveyor, crew familiarisation training, and delivery of all certification documentation.

06

Post-Installation Support

Ongoing technical support, spare parts procurement, and annual maintenance to ensure continued BWM Convention compliance throughout the vessel's service life.
